Mystical Realism by Laura Makabresku
- Kairos Gallery Opening Reception
- Saturday, November 1, 5:00-8:00 PM
- Refreshments will be served
All are invited to join us for the All Saints Day Opening Reception Nov 1, 5-8PM to take in this extraordinary exhibit of otherworldly photographs in our Kairos Main Gallery and Prayer Room Gallery. These visual psalms will also feature descriptive captions written by Makabresku specifically for this collection. Mystical Realism, Makabresku’s own term for her work, is an immersive encounter with her contemplative spiritual world that offers a sanctuary for spiritual refreshment.
Laura Makabresku: Mystical Realism is the premiere solo exhibition of her work in the Americas. It features 46 photographic works curated with the artist from all the major periods of her work from 2015 to the present, all available for purchase. This collection of her painterly photographs offers an immersive encounter with her symbolic sacral world in which she longs to ‘be united with God in love.’ Makabresku’s images offer an invitation to experience the healing comfort and beauty of the divine presence that she experiences in her own life.
All the photographs in this exhibition are fully framed and hand signed by the artist. Instructions for purchasing will be in the galleries and on TheKairosGallery.com website gallery shop.
About The Artist
Laura Makabresku (b. 1987, Poland) is an internationally recognized photographic artist whose work blurs the line between reality and reverie. Through symbolic imagery, she crafts what have been called visual psalms in a style she refers to as mystical realism. Her photography explores themes of suffering and comfort, melancholy and hope, faith and transformation, often drawing inspiration from Biblical narratives, mysticism, fairy tales, and personal experiences and relationships. There is a tenderness and a touch of the divine in all her work that is profoundly affecting.
Makabresku’s quiet, arresting compositions have earned her a global following, including more than a quarter of a million followers on Instagram, where her work circulates widely among those drawn to its intimate yet transcendent beauty. Based in Poland, her photography has appeared in international publications including Juxtapoz, Kinfolk, and L’Officiel, and it has been exhibited across Europe and Japan. Her recent interview by Yahia Lababidi in World Literature Today reveals much about her ‘otherworldly art’ which Lababidi says ‘is a sanctuary we visit so that we can return to this world spiritually refreshed.’ A printed version of this interview is available in The Kairos Gallery.
She lives a simple contemplative life in the Polish countryside with her husband Radek, where she continues to create quietly and intuitively, drawing inspiration from the land, her faith, and the interior life.
