Young Oceans makes prayer music. According to founder, songwriter, guitarist and primary vocalist Eric Marshall, they have two rules: we won’t sing anything we don’t truly believe and we won’t make music we wouldn’t want to lay on the floor and listen to ourselves. Mission accomplished, and since their eponymous first album released in 2012, which was selected as a Top 10 Album of the Year by RELEVANT Magazine, up to their most recent 2022 Subjects album, they have gained a large and growing following of fellow believers who enjoy listening to Young Oceans not just on floors, but in cars and offices, dorm rooms and sanctuaries, as well as in concert in churches, clubs, and auditoriums around the country. Subjects also finds well-known artists like Josh Garrels, Amanda Cook, John Mark Pantana, Liz Vice, The Brilliance and others joining them on 10 of the 11 tracks.
With over 350,000 monthly Spotify listeners, Young Oceans is striking a nerve, and the Kairos Arena is excited to bring them to St. Andrew’s ~ Mount Pleasant October 11. Young Oceans hereby “cordially invites you into their little world of gut-honest prayers, communion with God, and a desire to tap into the conversation outside our current dimension.”
From atmospheric instrumental rock to passionate and intimate songs of prayer and worship, their music is unique, artistically creative, heartfelt, beautiful and soul stirring. According to Dwight Huthwaite, Worship Arts Director at St. Andrew’s, “Young Oceans is so unique it’s hard to describe them or find a comparison. They are kind of like Davidic poetry in an ambient rock soundscape; but if you love God, ambient rock, and worshiping in the deep end, you will probably love Young Oceans.” Young Oceans Does Sound A Little Like: All The Bright Lights, José González, The Violet Burning, Elbow, Lord Huron, The Brilliance, Brian Eno, U2, Cageless Birds, Explosions In The Sky
“Young Oceans push the furthest edges of the indie meditative genre with densely layered Eno-atmospherics of equal appeal to the devoted believer, meditative transcendentalist, and discerning art rock fan” (Noisetrade). But for Eric Marshall and Young Oceans, the hope is that you’ll join them in the prayer, communion, and conversation and find a bit of healing for your life.
There are many iterations to Young Oceans, from a solo acoustic presentation to a duo or trio up to a full band. The Kairos Arena is pleased to bring the full six member band to St. Andrew’s.
